Adoption Issues

One area of special interest is working with individuals who have needs related to their adoption experience - either as an adoptee, adoptive parent, birth parent, or people considering adoption. Each adoption experience is one-of-a-kind for those involved, yet there are predictable "normative crisis" that occur throughout the development of adoptive families and for individuals of the adoption triad. In my experience, it can be invaluable to work with a therapist who knows & understands these issues "from the inside out".

Recents insights from neuroscience can be a helpful piece of the puzzle for those working to understand issues related to adoption -- particularly for adoptive parents -- whether it starts from the perspective of early adoption decision-making to post-adoption parenting concerns, integrating the basics of brain science into supportive counseling can make a real difference in working through & resolving these issues.

"Parents are the active sculptors of their children's growing brains. The immature brain of the child is so sensitive to social experience that adoptive parents should in fact also be called the biological parents because the family experiences they create shape the biological structure of their child's brain. Being a birth parent is only one way parents biologically shape their children's lives."
